Kora - het instrument

De kora is een westafrikaanse harp en behoort tot het type van de halsharpen of de harpluiten.

Het is het hoogstontwikkelde snaarinstrument van afrika.
Zowel de bouwwijze als ook de muziek zijn uniek op de wereld.

De kora vind je onder alle Mandingvolkeren.
Het instrument wordt door:
de Mandinka in Gambia, Senegal en Guinea Bissau,
de Malinké oftewel de Maninka in Guinée,
de Bambara oftewel de Bamana in Mali
en de Dioula in Ivoorkust (Côte d'Ivoire) gespeeld.
De grootste betekenis in het sociale leven heeft de kora in Gambia
en in de Casamance (het zuiden van Senegal).

De kora heeft een traditie die honderden jaren oud is.
Vroeger werd aan het hof van de heersers gespeeld.
De muzikanten behoorden tot de dienaren van het hof.

Onder de naam korri duikt de kora voor het eerst op in de literatuur
en wel in Travels in the interior of West Africa, geschreven door Mungo Park (Scotland) in 1799.

Ze heeft een grote korpus in de vorm van een halve bol,
een lange hals en twee niveau's met links 11 en rechts 10 snaren,
die over inkepingen in een loodrecht opgestelde kam lopen.

De manier waarop de kora wordt gespeeld, doet denken aan "finger picking" (bijvoorbeeld op de bluesgitaar).
De snaren zijn zo gerangschikt dat het mogelijk is om akkoorden, harmonien en snelle melodieloopjes te spelen.

some quality criteria:

  • tuning rings must fit tightly but still be moveable,

  • bridge must be in the middle in between the two handles with enough space for your fingers to reach each string easily,

  • string notches in the bridge must be sufficiantly apart so that the deep strings don't touch the neighbor strings when being played,

  • highest strings must not touch the edge of the calabash

  • construction of all parts of the instrument must be stable and symmetrical

  • hide must fit the calabash very tightly like a drum skin

  • sound must be very nice of course !!!
